WHOOP empowers members to perform at a higher level through a deeper understanding of their bodies and daily lives.WHOOP is hiring a Senior Software Engineer (Backend, Health Records) to build the foundational systems that enable secure, scalable ingestion and utilization of health data. In this role, you will shape the infrastructure that connects external healthcare ecosystems with WHOOP’s platform, transforming complex health records into meaningful, actionable insights. Your work will directly power personalized health experiences and expand WHOOP’s ability to deliver long-term value to members.RESPONSIBILITIES:● Lead the design and development of backend systems for ingesting and processing health record data from external sources (e.g., EHRs, third-party health platforms)● Architect and implement robust data pipelines to clean, normalize, and structure health record data for reliable downstream consumption● Design and maintain secure, scalable APIs and services that expose health record data to internal systems and member-facing features● Define and enforce access control mechanisms and data governance standards to ensure privacy, security, and compliance with healthcare regulations● Drive technical decision-making and system architecture to support scalability, reliability, and extensibility of health record systems● Collaborate cross-functionally with product, data science, and engineering teams to unlock new health insights and capabilities● Mentor other engineers and contribute to raising the technical bar across the teamQUALIFICATIONS:5+ years of experience building and operating backend systems and APIs in production environmentsExperience working with healthcare data standards (e.g., FHIR) and integrating with external health data sourcesStrong understanding of data privacy, security, and access control models, particularly for sensitive health dataExperience designing scalable data pipelines for ingestion, transformation, and validation of complex datasetsProficiency in backend technologies such as Java (or similar), relational databases (e.g., Postgres), and cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS)Experience with distributed systems and designing for high availability and reliabilityDemonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives and influence system architectureStrong cross-functional communication skills and ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environmentStrong commitment to embracing and leveraging AI tools in day-to-day tasks, ensuring AI-assisted work aligns with the same high-quality standards as personal contributions.Learn more about our Software Org and how to be successful in your engineering career at WHOOP via our Career Framework. This role is based in the WHOOP office located in Boston, MA. Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within each range, individual pay is based on factors such as job-related skills, experience, performance, and relevant education or training.  In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate will also receive benefits and a generous equity package. These ranges may be modified in the future to reflect evolving market conditions and organizational needs. While most offers will typically fall toward the starting point of the range, total compensation will depend on the candidate’s specific qualifications, expertise, and alignment with the role’s requirements.
